Retro party clothes are inspired by clothes of the past ranging from the forties to the eighties and are a fun way to dress in a unique and individual way. Although retro party outfits from all of the decades are right on trend at the moment, there is so much choice that you should have no problems in standing out and looking a little different from everyone else. You can also add your own modern twist to give your retro party clothes a completely unique feel.
Pick your decade
Each of the decades has its own character from the pretty practicality of the forties to the more glamorous fifties, the swinging sixties and the flowing relaxed styles of the seventies with a bit of disco diva look to boot. Each of these eras has some fabulous party dress styles which will look amazing this spring.
Forties – Tea Length Dresses
The forties was a time of make do and mend in Britain and dresses were pretty but practical. The skirt lengths were below the knee which is an incredibly flattering and on trend but if you want a slightly more up to date look you can also opt for a tea dress with a slightly shorter skirt length like this Cindy bead neck tea dress by Boohoo. Look for cute and fun prints and team with a brightly coloured cardigan or biker jacket to bring the look right up to date for 2011.
Fifties – Halter Neck Dresses
The fifties were characterised by the Hollywood era when glamour and elegance ruled. Fifties styles of dress are big news this spring and you can choose from a simple floral printed dress with a flared skirt for a more casual party or some full on glamour for a really special occasion. Halterneck dresses with full prom style skirts are perfect for partying in and would even work well for a spring wedding, we love this Halter Belle Prom Dress by Oasis. If you want to really work the look you could even add a pair of ladylike gloves. These dresses need to be worn with heels for maximum effect.

Sixties – Mini Shift Dresses
The styles of the sixties had a simple silhouette which is incredibly simple to wear. You can opt for mini shift dresses with or without sleeves in bold and bright colours and run prints. Party dresses with chiffon overlays are also a great style from the sixties that works particularly well. A Peter Pan collar dresses are also very fashionable at the moment and are great for parties. we love this lace Peter Pan collar dress by Rare Fashions.
Seventies – Maxi Dresses
Decadent maxi dresses of the seventies no only look great but are also really comfortable and easy to wear. They work well for both daytime and evening parties and if you want to really turn up the glamour you can opt for an embellished or one shouldered style. We love this purple frilled maxi dress by Dorothy Perkins.
If you are a little nervous of wearing retro style party dresses then a plain shift dress will look amazing for a special occasion in the spring with this floral hat by Oasis.

It’s going to be a long night
New Years Eve parties typically go on for later than most parties you will go to so ensure that you dress for comfort. At this time of year warmth should be one of your key concerns, look for an elegant cover up for travelling to and from party. You could also invest in a wrap, bolero or cape to keep you slightly warmer whilst at the party.
Comfortable shoes are also a must for new years eve especially if you plan on dancing. Heels are almost always the most glamorous choice for wearing with party dresses but you can make them more comfortable with gel pads and don’t forget to take some plasters in your clutch.
Whatever you choose to wear on New Years Eve, make sure that it is something that you feel comfortable in to allow you to get on with the serious business of partying. You need to feel confident and carefree in order to enjoy yourself to the max.

If you are going to a school or college prom this summer, you will probably be wanting to find the perfect princess prom dress to wear. Most girls dream of being a princess and with all the talk of the royal wedding, Princesses (and Princes) are very much on most peoples mind. For many, a prom is the first occasion that they will have to get really dressed up in an elaborate prom dress and they definitely want to make the most of it. But if you are only really used to wearing jeans and casual clothes, how do you go about finding the perfect princess prom dress?
Midnight Blue Organza Ball Gown – Debut at Debenhams
Pick your colour carefully
One of the most important factors when choosing a prom dress or any other dress is the colour. Whilst a pink tulle gown may be your idea of a princess prom dress, if pink isn’t your colour it won’ t have the desired effect. The perfect princess prom dress doesn’t have to be a really feminine colour, royal blue prom dresses are not only on trend but also look very regal. Look in your wardrobe and work out which colours clothes really look good on you, perhaps one of these colours would be the best choice for prom dress. Celebrity dresses are also a great source of inspiration. Look for a celebrity with a similar hair colour and skin tone to you and see which colours they choose to wear for their red carpet celebrity dresses.

Choose a style that flatters
Whilst in our heads we always picture a prom dress as having a really full skirt, in reality this does not suit everyone. Look for a style that suits you, the best way to work this out is to try on a variety of different styles of dress. Generally speaking if you are quite short try and go for a skirt that is not quite as full. Column style dresses can also look very elegant. If you are unsure whether a short prom dress style will be appropriate check out the photographs for previous years to see what everyone wore and speak to your friends to see what they are wearing.

Be realistic about price
Unless you happen to have a very lucrative Saturday job, you will probably have to beg, plead and cajole your parents in to buying you a beautiful prom dress. But you should be realistic about the price otherwise you will only end up feeling disappointed. If you are on a budget then try searching on the internet for ‘cheap prom dresses UK’ you may be very plesantly surprised by the range of affordable prom dresses available. You should try looking both for specialist online prom dress shops and also department stores. If you are buying online remember to leave plenty of time to allow you to try on the dress and get alterations if neccessary.
