How To Choose A Cover Up For Your Christmas Party Dress

So you have picked out some party clothes for Christmas perhaps an on trend leopard dress, sequin dress or black lace dress, but with the weather now turning so cold you might need to think about a cover up to give you that little extra warmth for your Christmas party or night out. Finding a party cover up can be a little challenging as often none of your usual or daytime cover ups will not be suitable. You will want something a little bit glamorous that will compliment your beautiful dress but not overshadow it. Of course if you have opted for a simple party dress, you could pick a cover up that makes a statement. A Christmas party cover up is also ideal for covering your shoulders at the beginning of the night or whilst eating your meal and can then be taken off later for dancing.

For a dress that makes a real statement like a sequin or leopard print dress, a simple cover up will usually work the best. Short cropped jackets, cardigans, boleros and shrugs all make great party cover ups. A long coat of jacket will cover up too much of your dress. Wraps and capes are also a very stylish addition to most party clothes including trousers and a top.

Grey Faux Fur Cape

If you have opted for the seasons fifties style lace dress with a flared skirt and want to continue with the vintage theme, why not add a faux fur cape. Not only does it look very glamorous but it is also really warm. A contrasting colour will usually look best to show your faux fur cape off, perhaps a grey, brown or cream colour with a black dress.

Black Beaded Cape

If you have a black dress and prefer all black party clothes then you could add some interest and sparkle to your outfit with a black beaded cape. The sparkle will draw the eyes up towards your face so be sure to put on some sparkly party make up to complete your look.

Simple Black Bolero

If you have chosen an elaborate party dress like a sequin dress or animal print dress, you will probably want a fairly simple cover up to balance the look and keep it stylish. This 3/4 sleeve style of bolero looks really classic and has the added benefit of having sleeves for some extra warmth.

Lace Jacket

For a smart tailored or shift dress, a structured jacket will look great. We love this lace jacket which could work great for daytime parties or even perhaps a work Christmas lunch as well as evening events.

Taffeta Cover Up

For a formal evening occasion or to wear with a formal evening dress, a taffeta cover up is suitably formal but also quite simple so as not to detract from the  dress. This cover up is both cropped and open allowing the evening dress to hang freely.

What ever party cover up you choose to wear, try and balance the overall look of your party clothes and accessories so that you have just the right amount of sparkle and glamour and most important of all remember to enjoy yourself.

The Blue Dress Can This Really Be The Only Colour You Need This Season?

One of the biggest trends in party dresses for SS11 is the blue dress. It is bold, it is bright and if you wear it to a party you can be sure that you will definitely not go unnoticed. It was a key look at several of the designer fashion shows back in the September fashion weeks and now it is also filling the high street shops and online fashion retailers.

Mesh Tube Dress – Rare Fashions

There are all sorts of blue dress to choose from. You can opt for a simple minimalist style or a more elaborate style with ruffles, frills or laser cut detail, the key to this look is to choose a really bold shade of royal blue.

Unfortunately the blue party dress is not for everyone. Such a strong colour will not look good with every hair colour and skin tone. Generally speaking it will look best on those who have a high degree of contrast between their hair and skin tone and a cool complexion (so undertones of blue, pink and purple). For those who blue is not their colour, there are plenty of other choices of party dresses for SS11.

Cream Calf Length Dress – Miss Selfridge

The cream or white dress is set to be another key look with all sorts of delicate detail including lace, embroidery and applique. These colour looks great on those with brown or black hair and olive skin but it also suits a range of other colourings. They also look great on those with a suntan.  One tip when choosing your cream or white dress, if you are going to a disco with lights be sure to test the dress for transparency first and make sure that your under wear is not visible.

Biba Asymmetric one shoulder maxi dress – Biba

Red party dresses are another eyecatching look that will be big in SS11. There is something iconic about a red dress that is captured so well in the classic love song ‘lady in red’ by Chris De Burgh. One shouldered and draped styles of red dress are particularly popular and a very flattering choice. Red dresses look great on those with  blond or brown hair but look best on those with warm skin tones (undertones of orange, olive and yellow), there are plenty of different  shades of red to choose from so try a few different options to see which suits you best.

Orange Pleated Swing Dress – Miss Selfridge

Orange again is a great colour for those with warm skin tones and works particularly well for those with mid brown hair colours. Bright orange is one of the most popular shades for the summer but if you are unsure of whether you can pull it off, there are a whole range of coral and peach shades which are also really on trend.

If accessorising a bright party dresses leaves you wondering where to start, there are a few easy options. Nude shoes are a great investment as they work with just about any colour and will help to elongate your legs. For the rest of your accessories you can choose to keep it neutral or go for the clash. A bright orange clutch bag with a blue dress or a purple bag with an orange dress will make your party dress look even more eye catching.

Love Gossip Girl, Love Miss Selfridge! The New Range of Party Wear

Miss Selfridge have now launched their second Gossip Girl collection which features some very desirable party dresses. Gossip Girl is just one of a number of TV programs lately that are incredibly watch-able not just for their story lines but also for their style too. The programme which started back in 2007 is about a group of college kids gone wild and using its hall ways as a runway as seen through the eyes of a blogger The “Gossip Girl”. The great thing about the Gossip Girl style is that it each series marks an evolution in the style of the characters from the plaid uniform, that was so popular Anna Sui based the whole of her Target collection on it to the more sophisticated college styles.

Like all great TV programmes that have made a name for themselves for their style, Gossip Girl has its own stylist responsible for carefully crafting and developing the individual style of each of its characters. Costume stylist for Gossip Girl, Eric Daman assisted on Sex and the City before moving on to his current role.

The main character of the show Blair Waldorf is played by Leighton Meister. She is a lover of polished looks and expensive clothes. Blair gives a nod to Hollywood glamour but still keeps the look contemporary. Serena has a much more relaxed boho or hippy style. Eric Daman has a mantra when it comes to style which  “to admire, attire — and be inspired”. He advises that ladies can develop their own style by looking for inspiration in what they admire. With so many girls admiring the Gossip Girl Style, it is likely that many will be using it as inspiration for their own personal style.

The < a href="" rel="nofollow" title="gossip girl party dresses by miss selfridge">Miss Selfridge Gossip Girl collection is small but perfectly formed  and contains four very desirable party dresses or party outfits. New Tea Length Dresses For SS11

New Tea Length Dresses For SS11

For SS11 tea length dresses are right on trend, making a refreshing change to the mini and maxi dresses that have been so popular lately. The rise in popularity of the tea length dresses is probably partly due to the increase in interest in retro styles and vintage fashion. The tea dress is a traditional style but can be brought up to date with a modern print or fabric.

Tea length dresses are usually about knee length or just below. They are a flattering choice and also fit well with the seasons retro and ladylike styles. They are great for those who don’t want show too much leg and prefer a party dress that is not too revealing. The gently flaring skirt of a tea length dress makes it practical and suitable for a range of occasions from parties to dresses for weddings but they can also work well as a ladies day dress for everyday wear. The versatility of the tea dress is defined by how you accessorise it. A pair of heels and a clutch bag will turn it into a great party dress whilst some flat ballet pumps will make it more suitable for everyday wear. An empire line dress also has a flattering cut with a seam just under the bust to allow the fabric to skim over the stomach, hips and thighs making this style of dress particularly good for those with pear or apple shape figures.

This Floral Tea Dress is a romantic choice with its feminine pink colour, its floral pattern, frills and chiffon fabric. It is the perfect ladies day dress for a warm summers day and would look great with a pair of gladiator sandals. For a really contrasting look, you could also add a leather biker jacket for the evening.

This Daisy Print Tea Dress takes a retro style and brings it right up to date with its striking pattern and waterfall frills down the side. Wear it by day with a blazer for the office or by night with a pair of killer heels for a night out with the girls. The high neck of this dress is especially flattering for those with a smaller bust.

This Light grey striped tea dress is a contemporary take on the trend for tea length dresses and fits very well with the minimalist look that will also be big this summer. It would look great with neutral coloured accessories for an elegant but understated outfit.

Another modern take on a classic style, this Petite Butterfly tea dress features a striking geometric print that is crying out to be accessorised with some bright colours. A bright blue hand bag or red shoes will turn this dress into an incredibly eye catching outfit that will work for all sorts of occasions.

This paisley border dressis a great boho version of the new tea length dresses for SS11. Wear it with gladiator sandals and a denim jacket for a relaxed but very stylish outfit for summer festivals.

Red Party Dresses – So Hot They Will Make You Sizzle!

Red party dresses are the perfect way to stand out from the crowd this Christmas. Perhaps not the obvious choice of colour when it comes to a dress for a Christmas party, but red party dresses can also look sophisticated, feminine, chic, festive and very stylish. The perfect choice if you want to look so hot that you sizzle. The LDB (little black dress) has a lot going for it in terms of versatility, but if you really want a party dress with the ‘Wow’ factor, the red party dress or cocktail dress is the answer.

You can pick from a range of different shades of red this season from bright to berry reds. Choose the red that really makes your complexion glow for the hottest party look. Those with dark hair will tend to look best in dark red shades whilst those with blond hair will look amazing in scarlets. Another great tip for choosing your red party dress is to keep it simple, the colour will provide enough of feature and a reason for people to look, there is no need to over complicate things.

At Richard Nichol there was a softly tailored one shouldered shift dress, the ultimate in elegance.
