Red party dresses are the perfect way to stand out from the crowd this Christmas. Perhaps not the obvious choice of colour when it comes to a dress for a Christmas party, but red party dresses can also look sophisticated, feminine, chic, festive and very stylish. The perfect choice if you want to look so hot that you sizzle. The LDB (little black dress) has a lot going for it in terms of versatility, but if you really want a party dress with the ‘Wow’ factor, the red party dress or cocktail dress is the answer.
You can pick from a range of different shades of red this season from bright to berry reds. Choose the red that really makes your complexion glow for the hottest party look. Those with dark hair will tend to look best in dark red shades whilst those with blond hair will look amazing in scarlets. Another great tip for choosing your red party dress is to keep it simple, the colour will provide enough of feature and a reason for people to look, there is no need to over complicate things.
Gain inspiration from the red dresses on the catwalk for autumn and winter 2010 which were a refreshing change to neutral colours that are also popular this year. At Richard Nichol there was a softly tailored one shouldered shift dress, the ultimate in elegance. Bottega Veneta also featured red with a skirt just above knee height worn with fishnets, a difficult look to pull off but can look amazing if done right. Alexander McQueen’s collection featured spectacular and elaborate red brocade dresses and an embellished floor length gown.
Here are some of our favourite red dresses.

Heidi one of the founder members of the all girl pop group Sugababes performed live last week with the group at the V festival in Chelmsford and the West Midlands. The V festival has become legendary for its great music line up but like so many of the other UK festivals fashion and what everyone is wearing has also become a key focus with summer dresses and welly boots being a popular choice.
She chose to wear the Celia Peacock Dress by Motel Rocks (pictured above), a short bodycon dress with an eyecatching digital print. The dress is available in red or blue and has a futuristic look to it with the brightly coloured and distorted abstract print. It also has a cutout back panel with a mesh material for a slightly Goth feel. The dress works really well as a party dress due to its ability to cling in just the right places. Follow Heidi’s lead by teaming this body con dress with tights and killer heels for a really sexy look. The dress can also be dressed down with work boots and a leather jacket for a much more casual look.
Heidi and the other Sugababes often wear bodycon styles and mini dresses. Heidi combines high street and designer clothing for a fun and stylish look that is very much a part of the Sugababes trademark. Heidi admits to keeping herself in shape by working out and exfoliating her skin regularly to ensure she looks her best in the revealing clothes that she wears on stage. She is also big fan of fake tan to give herself a healthy glow.
Digital prints like the one featured in Heidi’s Motel Rocks dress are big news this year and have been seen all over the catwalks including at shows like Peter Pilotto and Alexander McQueen. The bright colour and abstract designs are perfect for interesting and eye catching dresses.

Christmas party dresses are all about glamour, sparkle and style statements to get you noticed. Christmas is not a time for subtle looks that fade into the background. This Christmas the key trends in party dresses are eye-catching and bold. Here are the top 5 trends in party dresses .
The Sequin Dress
Everyone loves sparkle and if you don’t get the opportunity to wear it for the rest of the year Christmas is the one time that you can. All over sequins are hot news this year with gold and black also both being a really on trend colours when it comes to sequins. The sparkle of a sequin dress is balanced by the relative simple style which could include a t shirt style, vest style or even glamorous maxi dress style. One of the key influences on this trend is the amazing sequin creations by designer Ashish. We love this Toya sequin shift dress at Boohoo.
The Lace Dress
If you are looking for a party dress that is sexy in a very subtle way, then the lace dress is for you. Lace dresses are so huge this winter that there is most definitely a style to suit everyone from feminine fifties style dresses to more directional body con dresses. We love this lace tiered dress by Oasis which is the ultimate in luxury.
The Draped Dress
The draped dress is a trend that has been going strong for quite a few seasons now. This winter there are more draped party dress styles around than ever before with the one shouldered shape been amongst the most popular. The draped dress is probably one of the most flattering styles of party dress around this winter with its loosely fitting drapes concealing lumps and bumps and elongating the body. Lipsy have a great range of draped dresses that are perfect for partying in this Christmas. We love this one shouldered draped dress by Lipsy which definitely has a look for Greek Goddesss about it.
The Red Dress
Forget the Little black dress, this Christmas it is all about the little red dress. Red is such a great colour for Christmas and if you worry about whether red suits you,the red dress is available in a variety of shades to suit most skin tones. A bright red dress already makes a big style statement so one of the best ways to wear this trend is by keeping it simple. We love this Assymetric jersey drape dress by Lipsy.
The Leopard Print Dress
Leopard print is definitely seeing a revival this year and the winter sees it being featured on everything from accessories to coats. A Christmas party is a great time to wear leopard print as it is glamorous, bold and flattering. The leopard dress is such an eyecatching look that you will be sure to get noticed. we love this Janine cage back dress by Motel which combines a leopard ptint top with a slimming black skirt, perfect for dancing the night away.
Victoria Hesketh AKA Little Boots is a songstress with more than her fair share of style. Even her stage name alludes to the fact that she pays quite close attention to what she wears particularly on her feet. Her concerts showcase some wild outfits which she admits are ‘ a visual aid’ and all part of the performance. With Little Boots signature style of electro pop gaining her more and more fans and her latest album ‘Hands’ released this year and reaching number 5 in the UK charts, it looks like we are set to see lots more of Little Boots and her style.
But there is a lot more to Little Boots than her shows and performances, like most celebrities she loves to party and is also considered a style icon off stage. Little Boots is known for dressing eccentrically but also for her cute party dresses and the quirky prints that she wears. She loves disco dresses and prints that feature magic and fantasy. She likes shopping in vintage shops but also mixes high street pieces and has often been spotted in clothes from Motel Rocks. Here are some great Motel pieces that we know Little Boots would love to party in.
This Motel Belinda Cloud and Bird Dress features an amazing image which is just the sort of magical scene that Little Boots would love. The muted colours would look great with a faded denim jacket and it can be dressed up for a party with some silver jewellery or worn with an over sized chunky knit and boots (little ones!) for a more casual look.
This Motel Wanda Feathers dress is reminiscent of some of the quirky prints that Little Boots has been seen out and about in. The tulip style skirt is flattering for everyone and it would look great with a black tuxedo jacket and some killer heels. The strapless sweetheart neckline is perfect for showing off a quirky statement necklace and you could also add a belt in a contrasting colour.
Little Boots has also been spotted partying in a black lace dress by Motel. This Motel Jean dress in black lace is their latest version of the lace dress which is perfect for the winters lace trend. This dress needs very little in the way of accessories just a simple necklace and a great pair of heels. For a party cover up wear with a tailored jacket.
Little Boots like so many of us is a little partial to a LBT (little black dress) which is the most versatile party dress that you can get. She has previously in a black peplum dress by Motel which has now unfortunately sold out but we think she would also love this Barbara dress which has a really flattering neckline and three quarter length sleeves. Try wearing it with a sleeveless vintage denim jacket for a real pop princess look.
Little Boots has also designed a range of disco inspired clothes for high street store Oasis in the past, loves big shoulders and confesses to shopping in other mainstream high street shops when she has time.
Just as enjoyable as a party itself is the getting ready and choosing which party dress to wear. One of the big decisions this season for any parties that you attend will be whether to opt for a long or short party dress. Both are very much on trend and both have lots going for them. Which one you decide to wear will depend on your own taste and the party that you are going to. For those of us who are impulsive, it will also depend on which dress catches are eye when we do our shopping. Everyone perception of what is a long party dress and what is a short party dress will differ but for the purpose of this post long dresses will include anything below knee length and short dresses, knee length and above.
Long Party Dresses
Boohoo Chelsea Butterfly Maxi Dress
Goddiva Embellished Maxi Dress
Rare Fashion Tassel Maxi Dress
The ultimate long party dress for this summer has to be the maxi dress which has been seen in various guises throughout the season. From formal styles in black, satin or chiffon to more causal printed maxi dresses with bold and bright patterns or pretty vintage style florals, there are plenty of maxi dresses to choose from. But long party dresses also include those with three quarter(or mid calf) length skirts which are particularly suitable for daytime parties and occasions such as weddings and racedays. These dresses look great with either flared a line skirts which look amazing on ladies with larger hips or straight pencil style skirts which look stunning on slim ladies and those with hour glass shapes, particularly when accessorised with a belt.
The beauty of long party dresses is that they are suitable for more formal occasions, they are great for those who are a little self conscious of their body and they are incredibly stylish and subtly sexy without showing too much off. The strappy and fitted top of most maxi dresses help to balance the flowing skirt and show a bit of your body shape and the empire line is particularly flattering for those who want to cover a round tummy.
Short Party Dresses
Pixie Lott Backless Baby Doll Dress At Lipsy
Motel Linda Hibiscus Palm Dress
Little Mistress Embellished Ruffle V Neck Dress
Short party dresses are ideal for party animals who want to party all night. They are also great for hot balmy summer evenings when you want to keep as cool as possible. If you have amazing legs then a short party dress worn with killer heels is probably the best way to show them off. Short party dresses can range from cute baby doll dresses (also great for covering round tummies) with frilly details to vampy body con dresses, sequin or embellished dresses and the ubiquitous classic LBD. The trick to looking really stylish in a short party dress is to balance the hemline with the neckline. So if you are looking for a super mini dress opt for a higher neckline which will avoid it looking too much.
