Prom season is almost upon us and for those lucky enough to be attending a prom, it is time to start putting some thought into the all important decision on which of the many prom dresses out there to wear?
Another American cultural import, a prom is usually held to celebrate the final year of school but these days there are also proms celebrating other important milestones like end of sixth form, college or university. A prom is traditionally a formal event for American high school students and in UK proms can also be known as Leavers’ Ball or parties. Less formal alternatives are known as a leavers do and in Ireland they are called Debs which comes from the the French word word Débutante. Of course the word itself conjures up the aristocratic beginnings of the word where a young lady from a family with status reached the age of maturity, and as a new adult, is introduced to society at a formal presentation known as her “début”.
Modern Débutante Balls are nowadays not quite so traditional, and often held in aid of charity, and more about having fun and getting dressed up rather finding the right blood line to marry into.
When choosing which prom or party dress to wear to a prom or ball, it is advisable to check on the dress code and look at what sort of prom dresses attendees have worn in previous years. Traditionally ball dresses, evening dresses or prom dresses and gowns are worn but it really does depend on the occasion and sometimes less formal party dresses or shorter cocktail dresses are considered acceptable. Formal prom dresses are usually floor length gowns or mid length dresses and often feature luxurious fabrics, embellishment or details such as dresses with lace.
Designer Prom Dresses
If you choose to get a designer prom dress, it is a great investment. Once you have been to your prom, it will last for many years to come or you can sell it as second hand so that someone else can enjoy wearing it to their prom. Alberta Ferretti is particularly known for her beautiful evening wear. This goddess like draped dress for her young and trendy label Philosophy Di Alberta Ferretti would make the perfect prom dress.

A formal style of a maxi dress is a flattering, on trend and cost effective dress to wear to a prom and totally on trend for this season. There are plenty of styles of maxi dress to choose from with the like of Goddiva having some great affordable options to choose from including this glamorous shimmering foil dress with halterneck top.
Traditional Prom Dresses
Traditional prom dresses are usually strapless and fitted at the top flaring out to a long full length skirt or mid length skirt from the waist. Some times they have thin shoulder straps, net under skirts, sashes or corsage detail. Debenhams have a range of beautiful traditional prom dresses in fabrics like organza and taffeta like this gold rose corsage dress.
Cocktail Prom Dresses
For a slightly less formal prom or ball a shorter party or cocktail dress is a great option. Detail and features like draping, beading and embellishment will help to make a dress that little bit more special than an average party dress but not quite as dressy as a formal ball gown. Lipsy have an amazing selection of stunning cocktail dresses, we love this one shoulder pleated satin dress.
Cheap Prom Dresses
If you are on a budget but don’t want to compromise on style you can often get great designer dresses by shopping online or at high street shops instead of the specialist prom dress retailers. You could also try shopping the sales for some great bargains. Boohoo.com have some great dresses at great prices that could be worn to a prom or leavers ball. We love the detailing on this beaded maxi dress.

A wedding is something of a big deal for the bride and groom, as well as family and friends. Not only is the beginning of the new life together but a great chance to celebrate with everyone together on the same day in the same place. Most weddings take a lot of planning and cost quite a lot of money, but if planned well they will be really happy and memorable for all involved. For the bride, one of the biggest considerations is what she will wear. Typically brides wear a long white dress but a shorter style or different colour are also possibilities. The bride should choose something that suits her and the wedding she has planned perhaps a classic style or a more trendy and fashionable look, depending on her own personal style.
Many of the wedding dress styles for the season are fairly simple with clean lines but that does not mean that you can’t have a frothy, frilly dress if that is what you want. A wedding is not really about today or tomorrow, it is about the rest of your lives together. Wearing the dress that you have always dreamt of will help to make your dream wedding. For wedding dresses to feel right they should be comfortable to wear. If you are not completely comfortable, you will not be able to enjoy your big day as much as you should. If you just can’t walk in high heels then perhaps opt for a really small heel instead. Remember that walking down the aisle will seem like a trek if you can hardly walk in your chosen shoes.
Once you have picked out your dream wedding dress, there is still so much more to think about. There are the shoes, the underwear, the head dress, the hair, the make up and possibly other accessories. It can all seem quite daunting and you you will probably worry whether it will all look perfect together. The answer is simple, go with what feels right for you. check out magazines, websites and shops for ideas but it is really all about what will suit your dress, your personality and the day you want to create. Try thinking about the overall look that you are trying to create. Perhaps you want a natural look with a simple dress, hair down and minimal make up. You may want the complete opposite with everything as big and bold as possibles. There is no right or wrong for your wedding day, you can do whatever you like.
Hold on to your hats ladies, as we’re very excited today due to us being able to announce the long awaited, and the stunningly fantastic new collection of Lipsy party wear and Party Dresses inspired by the one and only British Pop princess Pixie Lott!
It seems as if we we’ve waited an absolute eternity for this day as Lipsy have been drip feeding us for what seems like forever with sneaky glimpses of the new Party Dresses and Summer festival inspired ranges, and right and the very end all of a sudden, it was announced officially that the ranges were being unveiled today.
But now it is here and our wait is now over, the launch of Pixie’s ranges both in store and on line seems to have lived up to the hype, so much so that our only concern is whether Lipsy have anticipated the demand, as from what we see it looks absolutely sensational, and as its just in time for the key summer season I’m sure that trade will be brisk, so don’t be surprised to hear of shortages and out of stocks..
having looked at the ranges, we have to say that we whole heartedly agree with all the “glossies” who previewed the ranges during the run up to the launch over the past week or so, they all gave Pixie’s new collection sensational reviews, with one fashion editor even proclaiming about the party dresses and summer festival ranges, “they’re about as catchy as her songs”. And like her songs, its just so damn difficult to know which one you like the most, so the main problem becomes deciding which one to buy first!? ahhhh the dilemma!
If that wasn’t enough The Pixie Lace Bodice Dress is slightly more edgy, but a real stunner if you’re looking to create an impression with its sexy lace bodice top complete with bustier cups which is a very hot trend as underwear worn as outerwear, completed with gorgeous printed skirt with lace detail trim at the hem matching the top..
Perhaps the more traditional type of super cute Lipsy influenced Party dress is embodied in the Pixie Embellished Bandeau Frill Dress which is The ultimate “girly” party dress which features a tiered skirt below the waist and a contrasting top sweatheart style neckline with beading and stitching around the bust area, a real head turner we thinks!
One of the biggest trends this Summer ladies, is Nude, by that we don’t mean being seen naked, oh no, if that was so, sure it would get you noticed and make a splash, but perhaps better as a post in naturalist monthly not Party Dresses. We do of-course mean the colour nude or flesh tones and any colour related there of, such as vanilla, champagne, putty or Oyster et al.
Nude tone are one of the best tips this summer to be bang on trend, elegant and of-course classically understated and having the likes of Stella McCartney, Herve Lerger and 3.1 Philip Lim all showing nudes in their Spring/Summer collections, there’s a real buzz about nudes this year.
All these colours are so big for the summer more especially at its the busiest time of the year for weddings and the acquisition of new wedding outfits for women or similar summer events, Nudes are definitely the trend one should look to first. With the minimalist understated look being the cool chic look for the summer, especially for wedding outfits or cocktail dresses for a swanky summer garden party, you obviously need to look for the correct items for the occasion.
Two such choices are, firstly, The Lenore Dress by Kirsty Doyle, this stunning 100% pure Silk dress ticks two major trends in one garment, the nude tones of this strapless dress offering you classic lines and understated elegance, and the styling of underwear detailing on outwear, this with corseted dress detailing with under wired cups. To Show the look off at It’s best pair with a blazer or a wrap and accessorise with tonal items.
Or perhaps secondly, you want make splash? this Nude Mesh Bandage Dress by BCBGMAXAZRIA certaainly does that. It Fits like a glove in true body-con fashion, with panelling designed to flatter every curve. This Nude and mesh bandage mini dress with body-con panels fastens with a zip to the back, the styling gives hints that this brand is the little sister to Hervé Leger.
Hopefully you can find some further inspiration for nude tones by clicking on the image below to take you through to a whole plethora of nude delights.
