Pixie & Lipsy – Party Dresses For Women

This week saw the launch of the much anticipated Pixie Lott AW11 collection for Lipsy. As it turns out the pixie collection is a mouth watering array of wonderful pieces that you can’t wait to try on yourself.

Lipsy are most notable for their party dresses for women and older teens, but the new Pixie collection transcends the age gap somewhat, The 4th collection from Pixie Lott is quite the accomplishment, and from the evidence shown, the chart topping pop star who at only 20, is obviously somewhat of talent in fashion design too.

Unsurprisingly the collection has more than it fair share of party dresses for women, but you would also expect from Lipsy to have a collection full of the biggest on trend styles of the season, which includes everything from LBD, Body cons, 60′s style and cut out detailing as well as prints. It is packed with the most delicious and on trend pieces of any collection on the high street today…we challenge anybody not to find something they fall in love with!

Not Just Party Dresses For Women

Pixie’s collection is made up of day wear and evening wear and of course women’s party dresses, so you’re just as likely to find something to wear for work, than Pixie is to find something for one of her red carpet appearances.

And the piece de resistance in my opinion in the whole pixie collection is the ultimate LBD by Pixie Lott, this chic body con party dress features a v-shape pointed sweetheart bandeau neckline which is not only quite unusual but is a styling detail more common to designer dresses. How to Dress For the Races

How To Dress For The Races

If you are a fan of horse racing, one of your biggest style challenges of the summer could be how to dress for the races. Horse racing has a huge following in the UK and around the world and race days are often a big event and the perfect opportunity to get dressed up in your best clothes. But as with any big event choosing how to dress for the races can present a bit of a dilemma. First of all you need to ensure that you follow the correct etiquette, secondly and obviously, you will want to look incredibly stylish and thirdly you will need to think about the practicalities of what you wear.

Dress For The Races – Course Etiquette

dress for the races

Cream Butterfly Dress Dorothy Perkins

The etiquette and dress code for race day will depend on a number of factors including which race course and which race day you are attending and also which type of ticket you have. Some parts of the race course allow for much more casual dress, whilst others have a strict dress code. If you are attending ladies day or another special event the dress code will be more formal and require a smart ladies day dress and perhaps a hat or fascinator. Other meets may be much less formal. If you are unsure, you can usually find full details of the dress codes for the date and course that you are visiting on their website.

Picking a Stylish Ladies Day Dress

Wine Shift Dress by John Rocha at Debenhams

As ladies day is usually the biggest event in the racing calendar, it is a great time to make a bit of an effort with your outfit. Everyone usually gets dressed up in a ladies day dress or suit and you will see plenty of hats. At Ascot, it is particularly formal and ladies go out of their way to wear the biggest and most noticeable hats.

Tea length dresses look great for the races as they are elegant and stylish without revealing too much leg. A beautiful shift dress is also another great choice which is both flattering to most figures and very classic. If you are on a budget, a maxi dress on sale is the ideal way to look well dressed and stylish without spending too much money.

Dress For The Races – Race Day Practicalities

The final consideration when considering how to get dressed for the races is your comfort. Race courses can be windy and depending on your ticket you could well be standing up outside for some or part of the day. If it is a windy day, think carefully about hats, fascinators and long floaty skirts, which could become a hindrance. A shift dress is probably the easiest style of dress to wear in these conditions. Add a jacket or shrug to keep you warm. Depending on the race course and your ticket, you may also be stood on grass, so consider wearing a wedge heel rather than a stiletto that will sink into the ground.

Race day is really all about having fun so how every you choose to dress for the races, make sure that you are comfortable and stylish.

Coachella Style – Party Clothes For Summer Festivals

Summer festivals are a bit like one big long party and they definitely need a very specific type of party clothes. If you are lucky enough to have tickets to any of the big festivals (or smaller more intimate ones) this summer, then you should put in some careful thought about what you will be wearing. With the Coachella festival in the US already over, you can always check out the street style pictures for inspiration and to see which festival fashion is going to be big news this year.

And with this weekend marking the start of the summer festival season with the fist event of the summer BBC radio one’s big weekend in Carlisle, its a great introduction to what people are wearing this for summer festival fashion especially as its going GaGA crazy this year, you can see the whole event live streamed here.

If you are going to a festival, despite being all excited about the whole adventure, you will need to consider the practicalities of festival going, mainly the weather. If it is hot you will need to dress to keep cool and keep the sun off you, but if it is wet you will need to be prepared for a lot of mud. Festivals are a great place to show off your individuality and pretty much anything goes as long as you will feel comfortable wearing it.

Whatever you choose to wear to a festival, it should not be something that you would be really upset about ruining. Save your expensive designer clothes for another day and consider investing in jumpsuits, cheap maxi dresses or beach dresses that can be worn with either boots or sandals depending on the weather. Denim shorts are also a good choice for festivals if the weather is hot but are also a practical choice with a pair of hunter wellies if the ground is particularly muddy.

At Coachella this year some of the key looks included seventies inspired floral maxi dresses worn with floppy hats, the lace dress (spotted on Katy Perry, Alexa Chung and Whitney Port), asymmetrical hemmed dresses and loose fitting or cropped t shirts. Although some of these looks seem quite casual, they can be coverted to festival party clothes with just a few simple accessories. Bold and bright prints were also popular with anything from a leopard print dress to abstract tribal print or tie dye fitting the bill perfectly.

Hair flowers, tribal jewellery, hats, headbands, belts, socks and fringed bags were everywhere. Just one or two carefully chosen accessories can transform cheap maxi dresses into something amazing or a beach dresses into a fabulous festival outfit. Sun hats are also particularly useful for protecting yourself from the sun. Don’t forget some shades to complete the rock and roll look and keep the sun out of your eyes so that you can see your favourite band.

Here are some of my picks of the best festival fashion out there from cheap maxi dresses to beach dresses and fabulous fun accessories.

Get Spotted In A Polka Dot Dress For Summer 2011

This summer the polka dot dress is the ideal choice for all sorts of occasions from party dresses to dresses for the races and even casual dresses. Polka dots are striking, they are cute and they are also very retro, another key trend for the summer. Here are a few of our favourites.

Polka Dot V Neck Tunic Rare Fashion

With its large polka dots this pretty dress by Rare is a modern take on the polka dot trend. It is available in a variety of colours which work for casual dresses or party dresses.

Polka Dot 50′s Style Dress – Boohoo

Another cute retro polka dot dress with a modern twist this dress by Boohoo makes an amazingly cheap party dress – you would never know to look at it!

Crochet Collar Polka Dot Dress – Boohoo

The crochet collar on this adds extra cuteness to the retro polka dots. It is a great choice if you are looking for casual dresses which can double up as smart dresses with the addition of some heels.

Morgan Polka Dot Dress – Very

This style of dress is very fifties and with its slightly longer hem is perfect for more formal occasions perhaps if you are looking for a wedding guest outfit or dresses for the races.

There are so many different styles around this summer, you could find it difficult to make up your mind which polka dot dress to choose. The great thing is that polka dots can look good on everyone, you just need to pick the perfect polka dot dress for you. Here are a few pointers.

Which colour polka dot dress?

Black and white is by far the most common and classic style of polka dot dress but it can also make some complexions look a little drained so look out for some other alternatives. Red and white is a fun and striking choice for smart dresses  or casual dresses and pastel colour polka dots are great for dresses for the races or a wedding guest outfits. Navy and white is also always a good alternative to black and white.

How big are the polka dots?

As a general rule larger polka dots work well for wedding guest outfits, raceday outfits and party dresses. Smaller polka dots work well for a smart dress or work wear. If you are petite smaller polka dots will be best for you as they won’t drown you. The bigger the dots the bigger the impact so pick your polka dot dress depending on the look that you would like to achieve.

Which style?

There are so many different polka dot dresses available that you shouldn’t find it difficult to find one that really compliments your body shape. If you have an hour glass figure, a fitted shift dress style will look amazing and you can also add a belt to highlight your waist. If you have a slim build, a high necked fifties style fit and flare dress will look fabulous, for apple and pear shapes, tea dress styles are perfect.

How To Find The Perfect Princess Prom Dress

If you are going to a school or college prom this summer, you will probably be wanting to find the perfect princess prom dress to wear. Most girls dream of being a princess and with all the talk of the royal wedding, Princesses (and Princes) are very much on most peoples mind. For many, a prom is the first occasion that they will have to get really dressed up in an elaborate prom dress and they definitely want to make the most of it. But if you are only really used to wearing jeans and casual clothes, how do you go about finding the perfect princess prom dress?

Midnight Blue Organza Ball Gown – Debut at Debenhams

Pick your colour carefully

One of the most important factors when choosing a prom dress or any other dress is the colour. Whilst a pink tulle gown may be your idea of a princess prom dress, if pink isn’t your colour it won’ t have the desired effect. The perfect princess prom dress doesn’t have to be a really feminine colour, royal blue prom dresses are not only on trend but also look very regal. Look in your wardrobe and work out which colours clothes really look good on you, perhaps one of these colours would be the best choice for prom dress. Celebrity dresses are also a great source of inspiration. Look for a celebrity with a similar hair colour and skin tone to you and see which colours  they choose to wear for their red carpet celebrity dresses.

Lace Tutu Ballerina Dress by Rare Opulence

Choose a style that flatters

Whilst in our heads we always picture a prom dress as having a really full skirt, in reality this does not suit everyone. Look for a style that suits you, the best way to work this out is to try on a variety of different styles of dress. Generally speaking  if you are quite short try and go for a skirt that is not quite as full. Column style dresses can also look very elegant. If you are unsure whether a short prom dress style will be appropriate check out the photographs for previous years to see what everyone wore and speak to your friends to see what they are wearing.

Pink Taffeta Corsage Dress by Debut at Debehams

Be realistic about price

Unless you happen to have a very lucrative Saturday job, you will probably have to beg, plead and cajole your parents in to buying you a beautiful prom dress. But you should be realistic about the price otherwise you will only end up feeling disappointed. If you are on a budget then try searching on the internet for ‘cheap prom dresses UK’ you may be very plesantly surprised by the range of affordable prom dresses available. You should try looking both for specialist online prom dress shops and also department stores. If you are buying online remember to leave plenty of time to allow you to try on the dress and get alterations if neccessary.

The Blue Dress Can This Really Be The Only Colour You Need This Season?

One of the biggest trends in party dresses for SS11 is the blue dress. It is bold, it is bright and if you wear it to a party you can be sure that you will definitely not go unnoticed. It was a key look at several of the designer fashion shows back in the September fashion weeks and now it is also filling the high street shops and online fashion retailers.

Mesh Tube Dress – Rare Fashions

There are all sorts of blue dress to choose from. You can opt for a simple minimalist style or a more elaborate style with ruffles, frills or laser cut detail, the key to this look is to choose a really bold shade of royal blue.

Unfortunately the blue party dress is not for everyone. Such a strong colour will not look good with every hair colour and skin tone. Generally speaking it will look best on those who have a high degree of contrast between their hair and skin tone and a cool complexion (so undertones of blue, pink and purple). For those who blue is not their colour, there are plenty of other choices of party dresses for SS11.

Cream Calf Length Dress – Miss Selfridge

The cream or white dress is set to be another key look with all sorts of delicate detail including lace, embroidery and applique. These colour looks great on those with brown or black hair and olive skin but it also suits a range of other colourings. They also look great on those with a suntan.  One tip when choosing your cream or white dress, if you are going to a disco with lights be sure to test the dress for transparency first and make sure that your under wear is not visible.

Biba Asymmetric one shoulder maxi dress – Biba

Red party dresses are another eyecatching look that will be big in SS11. There is something iconic about a red dress that is captured so well in the classic love song ‘lady in red’ by Chris De Burgh. One shouldered and draped styles of red dress are particularly popular and a very flattering choice. Red dresses look great on those with  blond or brown hair but look best on those with warm skin tones (undertones of orange, olive and yellow), there are plenty of different  shades of red to choose from so try a few different options to see which suits you best.

Orange Pleated Swing Dress – Miss Selfridge

Orange again is a great colour for those with warm skin tones and works particularly well for those with mid brown hair colours. Bright orange is one of the most popular shades for the summer but if you are unsure of whether you can pull it off, there are a whole range of coral and peach shades which are also really on trend.

If accessorising a bright party dresses leaves you wondering where to start, there are a few easy options. Nude shoes are a great investment as they work with just about any colour and will help to elongate your legs. For the rest of your accessories you can choose to keep it neutral or go for the clash. A bright orange clutch bag with a blue dress or a purple bag with an orange dress will make your party dress look even more eye catching.
