Summer festivals are a bit like one big long party and they definitely need a very specific type of party clothes. If you are lucky enough to have tickets to any of the big festivals (or smaller more intimate ones) this summer, then you should put in some careful thought about what you will be wearing. With the Coachella festival in the US already over, you can always check out the street style pictures for inspiration and to see which festival fashion is going to be big news this year.
And with this weekend marking the start of the summer festival season with the fist event of the summer BBC radio one’s big weekend in Carlisle, its a great introduction to what people are wearing this for summer festival fashion especially as its going GaGA crazy this year, you can see the whole event live streamed here.
If you are going to a festival, despite being all excited about the whole adventure, you will need to consider the practicalities of festival going, mainly the weather. If it is hot you will need to dress to keep cool and keep the sun off you, but if it is wet you will need to be prepared for a lot of mud. Festivals are a great place to show off your individuality and pretty much anything goes as long as you will feel comfortable wearing it.
Whatever you choose to wear to a festival, it should not be something that you would be really upset about ruining. Save your expensive designer clothes for another day and consider investing in jumpsuits, cheap maxi dresses or beach dresses that can be worn with either boots or sandals depending on the weather. Denim shorts are also a good choice for festivals if the weather is hot but are also a practical choice with a pair of hunter wellies if the ground is particularly muddy.
At Coachella this year some of the key looks included seventies inspired floral maxi dresses worn with floppy hats, the lace dress (spotted on Katy Perry, Alexa Chung and Whitney Port), asymmetrical hemmed dresses and loose fitting or cropped t shirts. Although some of these looks seem quite casual, they can be coverted to festival party clothes with just a few simple accessories. Bold and bright prints were also popular with anything from a leopard print dress to abstract tribal print or tie dye fitting the bill perfectly.
Hair flowers, tribal jewellery, hats, headbands, belts, socks and fringed bags were everywhere. Just one or two carefully chosen accessories can transform cheap maxi dresses into something amazing or a beach dresses into a fabulous festival outfit. Sun hats are also particularly useful for protecting yourself from the sun. Don’t forget some shades to complete the rock and roll look and keep the sun out of your eyes so that you can see your favourite band.
Here are some of my picks of the best festival fashion out there from cheap maxi dresses to beach dresses and fabulous fun accessories.

With both Natalie Portman and Jessica Alba both expecting babies, they also proved that it is entirely possible to look amazing in a red carpet party dresses with a baby bump. Jessica Alba looked stunning in electric blue.
At the Brit awards Cheryl Cole arrived in a show stopping Stella McCartney sequin dress with a thigh high split. She took the unusual choice of wearing nude shoes instead of black and it really worked making her legs look super long.
Rhianna also made a big entrance with a very colourful concoction of an evening dress in purple and turquoise teamed with her red locks that definitely got every one’s attention although it attracted very mixed opinions. The dress was by Christian Dior Couture. Avril Lavigne proved she is a real rock chick even when it comes to red carpet dresses with a full skirted little black dress and neon streaks in her long hair. If you love the retro look, you will love Sophie Ellis Bextor’s choice of red polka dot prom dress. Lisa Snowdon opted for an eye catching pop of colour in a neon yellow asymmetrical mini dress. Jessie J also rocked the red carpet in a thigh skimming Vivienne Westwood Couture corseted dress.
If you want to get a bit of that red carpet style and wear amazing celebrity party dresses, it can sometimes be difficult to find your favourite looks without the celebrity budget. That is why we are so excited about McBerry, a great place to find celebrity party dresses at great prices.
This beautiful cut out pleated skirt dress is almost identical to the one worn by style icon Cheryl Cole. Follow Cheryl’s lead and wear it with a ladylike and glamorous up do.
Emma Watson is one of the most admired celebrities at the moment. As the new face of Lancome, model for Burberry and part of a collaboration with People Tree everyone wants to know what she is wearing. This lace and feather dress is identical to the one she wore, one of the most wanted celebrity party dresses of the season.
With her own fashion label Danni Minogue is definitely one to follow in the style stakes. This glittering gold and silver dress is just like the one that she wore for the Marie Claire cover shoot. It has also be worn by Cameron Diaz and Carmen Kass.

Seventies Glamour Party Clothes
The seventies were all about laid back glamour so make great inspiration for party clothes. They also happen to be right on trend at the moment and likely to stick around for further seasons so now is a great time to invest in that sparkling sequin dress or elegant halterneck dress. The look of the seventies tends to be long and flowing, which makes seventies style party clothes a really flattering choice. From hippy and boho styles to the luxurious Studio 54 look, there is a seventies style of party clothes for everyone and there are plenty of choices available in all of your favourite online fashion retailers.
Party Clothes – The Sequin Dress
For those who want to glitter and shimmer on the dance floor, a sequin dress is the perfect party clothes option. You can choose from a full on floor length sequin evening dresses or a cute shift dress with some sequin trim for a more subtle look.
This floor length sequin embellished maxi dress at Oasis is very reminiscent of the seventies with its long sleeves. It is ideal if you are attending an outdoor party in the evening as the sleeves will give a little extra warmth.
As an alternative to a sequin dress, these Pewter Sequin Palazzo trousers from the Limited Edition Collection at Dorothy Perkins also work really well as party clothes when teamed with a corset or halterneck top.
Party Clothes – The Halterneck Dress
Halter neck styles are great for summer parties and when you combine them with the summer seventies trend for maxi dresses they make an incredibly flattering outfit that disguises tummies, hips, thighs and legs. This blue floral halter maxi dress at Dorothy Perkins also combines a really pretty floral print which is another key trend of the summer.
Jumpsuits are firmly back on trend for the summer. They make great alternatives to party dresses and look fabulous when worn with a pair of killer heels for maximum effect. This one shoulder jumpsuit at Oasis is particularly flattering and glamorous with its draped sleeve and wide legged trousers.
The Assymetrical Dress
Both shorter style and maxi dress asymmetrical styles make great party clothes. These dresses are reminiscent of the Studio 54 era and particularly the designs of Halston, a label that was really popular in the seventies. This bright blue one shoulder swing sleeve dress by Lipsy is a dramatic choice of party clothes.
Beautiful floral prints are the perfect choice for a daytime party, barbecue or wedding. Choose from bold and bright florals in psychedelic colours, botanical prints featuring whites and greens and oriental prints in bold pinks and oranges. This Lily print maxi dress at Miss Selfridge is incredibly elegant and would work especially well for a really hot day as the loose fit will keep you refreshingly cool.
Seventies Style Accessories
Almost any seventies style party clothes including a halter dress and maxi style evening dresses will look best with a pair of wedge heels or sandals. For daytime parties you could also try adding a large brimmed floppy hat which will also keep the sun off your face. For the evening add some sparkly jewellery.

Lipsy As we know are the brand for Party Dresses and that is recognised by the celebs who flock to the store to get the latest look with the likes of American Celebutante Kim Kardashian, and our very own Cheryl Cole and Alexandra Burke who is a self confessed Lipsy-a-holic.
Hot in the Lipsy hit parade this week based upon popularity in store are these stunning party dresses, but the thing about it is that all but one of them are one shoulder dresses.
That suggested that an awful lot of us are loving that asymmetrical look right now, and no the wonder as it’s just a great on trend glamorous look that shows no sign of slowing down.
This wonderful Lipsy One shoulder drape dress has a great Grecian look defined by the layering and draping which is very popular at the moment, match with a pair of gladiators and you’re sorted, we mean gladiator shoes not the hulky Russell Crowe type of Gladiator of course.
This Lipsy Asymmetric Jersey Mini Dress Is also a great look, something quite different than the rest but will get you noticed. An alternative the Little Black Dress this Lipsy Asymmetric Jersey Mini Dress has a forgiving shape for a fuller figure and is also reminiscent of the vintage Halston 1970’s look which is making a great comeback at the moment too.

The Lipsy Beaded Detail One Shoulder Dress is a classic hollywood look with the classic asymmetrical style white draped dress and contrasting waist band.
